In Judaism, where Yom Kippur, the Day of the Atonement, begins at sunset tonight, a mitzvah means a commandment but the word is also a synonym for those sublime kindnesses people show each other in a faith tradition based in deeds, not creeds.

Rev. Marti Keller lives in the Atlanta area. She’s been a Unitarian Universalist minister for more than 25 years, serving individual congregations, as a guest minister and in leadership roles with the Unitarian Universalist Association. She’s also an essayist, a poet and an activist for human rights.
