Ron Ussery on Ralph Waldo Emerson (outdoor service cancelled)

Our experiment with outdoor service is cancelled. We’ll post a pre-recorded version of the service first thing Sunday morning here on our YouTube channel. Ron Ussery talks about a pillar of Unitarian Universalism, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Dick McMichael offers a reading from Emerson’s famous talk to the Harvard Divinity School in 1838. That one that got Waldo in a bit of trouble. (He liked to be called Waldo.)

Ron Ussery

Dick McMichael in 1955

Ron Ussery, at left, is a longtime member of our Fellowship, is our treasurer and a jack of many trades. His career included stints as an editor, public relations representative, personnel manager, retirement plan manager, bank vice president, teacher, AV guru…there’s more (including bicyclist), but you get the picture. Ron also is the Fellowship’s official McGyver—the man who can make almost anything work with a little duct tape and a few parts from his garage.

But wait, there’s more. Ron is a lifelong student with wide-ranging interests, including philosophy. Join us for a fresh look at Ralph Waldo Emerson

Dick McMichael, on the right—in a photo taken in Germany in 1955 by a renowned dance photographer…long story—also is renown, as a television journalist and news anchor here in Columbus and in Atlanta and Columbia, SC. Dick reads part of Emerson’s famous address to the Harvard Divinity School in 1838, which caused quite a stir at the time.

Again, you can watch this service here.
